The multifaceted host GerRee Hinshaw will have you howling with her stand up comedy in between acts and

will inspire and entertain while she belts out an impromptu song that recaps the evenings events.

The five minute open stage acts could consist of poems, puppet shows, perverted Dinsey-esque covers

or short skits. No two shows are alike. The local talent run the gamut of newbies to regulars and

it is truly inspiring that this event has taken place in Denver for the past eight years.

$5 gets you in the door, a ticket to raffle prizes collected from thrift stores and all the beer you can drink -

compliments from our friends at Breckenridge Brewery. Doors and sign up are at 7.00. Show is at 8.00.

It’s true, Valentines Day is an overrated Hallmark holiday. But, not when there’s actually something good to do. The sweetest block on Colfax – the 3100 block to be exact – is the home of The Shoppe Cupcakes Cereal Design is hosting a Valentines Day soiree at their delicious cafe (if you’ve never been, let this be your reason to go). Plus, the other tres chic, super cool shops Fabric Lab and Plastic Chapel have something cooking up too. And I hear the Roller Dolls will be throwing elbows. Nothing says, “Be Mine,” like a cupcake and some down and dirty roller derby.

Have a good ‘ol Colfax Block party V-Day.

I’m sure someone famous once said, ” ‘Tis nothing better than the pig.” It gives us so many delicious meats. Bacon, canadian bacon, ham, pulled pork, brisket, pancetta, spare ribs, I could go on.

The good people at Marczyk Fine Foods will be celebrating the pig tomorrow (Sat, Sept. 27th) with a pig roast.

Mmmmm Mmmm Mmm.

Come hungry. They’ll be serving slow-roasted pork from 11a.m. – 4 p.m. alongside beans, cole slaw, corn bread, potato salad and a bevvie for just $12.99. If you love the pig like I do, this is heaven. Eat up.

Our friends over at Joy Engine notified me – via their website - that a track bike shop is opening in Denver. The Track Shack. And, to celebrate their opening, they’re having a race!

Woooopppeeeee. I love track bikes. Never been on one, but even watching them is exhilarating. A track bike is made for a velodrome – which is a slanted oblong shaped track for bikes – and has just a single gear. If you haven’t been to watch a track bike race, getchyaself there. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon. By the looks of things, there will be some PBR on hand. What goes better with a sunny Saturday afternoon than a PBR and dudes tricking it and tearing around a course at high speed? Not much.

You must be dead if you’re unaware that the Democratic National Convention is rolling into town. It’s a historical event in one of the greatest elections of our time. So, don’t hide in your office. Get out there and experience it! If I could, I’d call in sick all week with DNC Fever. But, luckily, the heart of the action is a mere cruiser ride from this office. I intend on doing anything and everything I can to experience this history-making event. Also, I am on the prowl for George Clooney. I know he’s lurking around this city somewhere.

It’s on at this office for this lady and her co-worker. For the rest of the week, Heather and I will be channeling the hustling skills of our personal heroes, Patsy and Edina of “Absolutely Fabulous.” Ciggies, champs, LaCroix…basically this is us until next Friday:

Now, this blog is not playing politics. We don’t openly support one Presidential candidate or another. But, what we do support is awesome events in our town and especially our hood. And, next week, when the Democratic National Convention rolls into town, there are plenty of culturally wonderful events happening, right here in our own hood.

“The Manifest Hope Gallery exhibition celebrates arts pivotal role in creating cultural momentum and shines a spotlight on artists across the nation who use their voices to amplify and motivate the Obama campaign. The gallery exhibition highlights 5 central themes of the progressive grass-roots movement: Hope, Change, Progress, Unity, and Patriotism.”

So, while this event clearly supports one candidate, it also supports something even larger – art & culture. All next week at the Block Building, politics, art and culture will collide. Lucky us that it’s just down the block.

There is a list stuck to your refrigerator that is a mile long that requires some quality time with your tools and hardware collection. So, why the heck would you want to spend any more extra time looking at old hardware and tools? Because they’ve been made into and exhibit at the very cool Edge gallery.

“Hardware” is an exhibit inside Edge gallery. The idea is that it’s made to look like a hardware store. (A very artful, well designed hardware store).

Who knew inspiration could come from spending time in the basement with old tools.

I think it’s pretty brilliant.

May your next do-it-yourself project inspire the same greatness.

If you’re hanging out on a Wednesday this summer, thinking about what to do, but not wanting to spend your greenbacks on gas (I hear that) to drive to a bar, then join the Denver Cruisers for a cruiser rally. Get a bike off craigslist, meet up at The Ginn Mill, and cruise your fancy fanny all over downtown.

THINGS TO DO IN DENVER WHEN YOU’RE NOT DEAD – Fuel Happy Hour

A while back I posted a ONE SENTENCE RESTAU-RANT on an unnamed lunchery that was so good I swore I wouldn’t reveal the name for fear it would become overcrowded. Well, I didn’t reveal the name and still there’s a line out the door at lunchtime. Good for them. I’m glad they’re doing well. The deserve all the success they get. With a seasonal menu that includes sandos, salads, cupcakes, cookies and now BOOZE!!! It’s FUEL Cafe, and it’s —sigh—fantastic. It’s the best lunchspot in Denver hands down. Currently, I crave their BLFGT (bacon, Lettuce, Fried Green Tomato) on an hourly basis. How could you not? The sourness of the green tomato is perfectly balanced by the sweet aoili mayo and meaty bacon. A sando from heaven.

Anyway, back to the point. Our friends at FUEL are doing so well that they now have a patio and a liquor license. So, they are hosting happy hour every Thursday from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. with delicious bites such as corn fritters, masa boats, pork tacos and thirst quenchers such as sangria, limoncello cocktails and mojitos. Yes, there’s beer and wine ( a lovely rose, I might add).

What else are you doing on Thursday afternoon in this hot weather? Get down to FUEL and eat some bacon and drink some bevvies. Mmmkay? Okay.
